The microdrama pulse is loud this week. Jimmy Fallon’s first foray into the format, “Me Billionaire,” blasted past 20 million views in its opening week across social platforms. That number comes straight from Variety, and it signals a mainstream embrace that even the optimists didn’t see coming this fast.
Over on dedicated apps, the numbers are just as eye-popping. ReelShort remains the heavyweight, with “My Firefighter Ex-Husband Burns in Regret” hitting 70.1 million lifetime views. Industry estimates peg ReelShort’s revenue growing 34% this year to $1.05 billion. Fellow chart-toppers include “Keeping the Cowboy’s Baby” (18.3 million views) and “How to Wreck My Bully’s Heart” (6.5 million). The app ranks #9 in Entertainment on the Apple App Store, proof of its bite-sized storytelling grip.
DramaBox counters with sheer volume: 5 million downloads and a #6 slot on the Apple chart. Their latest trending entry, “Human Lyra stumbles on Dragon King Kael,” plays to the app’s romance and fantasy stronghold. Meanwhile, NetShort pushes female-led revenge sagas hard. “The Hidden Queen: My Husband’s Mistress Ruined My Empire” and “Daddy We’re Done” are grabbing shelf space, while “Little Troublemaker Turns Everything to Gold!” gets a dedicated promotional blast.
Then there’s the AI factor. China’s Fang Taozi, an AI-generated actress, drew 250 million views for workplace drama “The Laid-off Girl.” Studios like Holywater now aim to churn out 100 AI-made series a month. And the format’s reach keeps stretching: BuzzFeed Studios and muVpix are producing over 100 microdramas for TikTok and YouTube Shorts, while rock band The Script debuts a microdrama series on August 9 to support their new album.
The space is moving fast, and the spikes tell the story. Microdrama is the main event.
